Mirador El Silencio Trail Group Tour – Arenal Volcano Guided Hike

Mirador El Silencio is a great place to get a close up of Arenal Volcano. This is a lesser-known reserve that has an amazing volcano view.

At the beginning of the walk, you will enter the primary forest (never been cut down) where you can observe thick greenery, giant trees, and possibly some wildlife. After leaving the forest, you will walk the most anticipated section: the volcanic lava trails. Here you’ll hike along old lava flows, while your guide provides interesting information about how Arenal Volcano was formed, its eruption phases, and the details of the big eruption in 1968 that changed the area. You also will enjoy some nice views of the Green Lagoon and Lake Arenal. The hike is easy to moderate in difficulty.

The tour is with a certified, bilingual naturalist guide. The company that we work with has guides that know a lot about the history of Arenal and its prior eruptions as well as about local birds and animals you may encounter. This is useful because there is very little information available at the reserve so you don’t really know what you are looking at without the guide.

Cost: Group Tour (12 people max) – $61 per person adults. $30.50 per person children ages 4-11. Rates plus 13% tax. Children under 4 are free.

Offered: 8:00 a.m. or 2:30 p.m.

*Exact pick up time varies by location and will be provided on your confirmation document. Extra charges apply for areas outside the standard pick up zone (We will email you if this is the case.).

Duration: 3.5 hours door to door from your lodging (approximate)

Includes: Bilingual naturalist guide, round-trip transportation from your hotel or vacation rental, water, and entrance fee.

Minimum Age: None. *If you’re traveling with young children, a private tour is a great option because the guide can focus on only your family and go at your own pace. Here is the link for information on a private tour of Mirador El Silencio.

Wish we had more of the wildlife but probably my fault for not reading more of the excursion

The tour van arrived on time, and our guide, Andres, took us up to the El Silencio trail. He moved seamlessly between English and Spanish in his explanations. Along the way, he explained about the surrounding countryside, and showed us some interesting plants and insects and explained the history of the lava flows from the Arenal Volcano. This hike takes you through a short, shaded forest, and then you start the climb. The hike up was short and moderately steep, but safe, there were stairs, and a chain to grasp, and we took quick stops to catch our breath. We came down a different way, and Andres spotted a sloth moving around in the tree! Then we walked down to the lake. Andres checked in with the group frequently to find out what we wanted to explore further and to answer questions. When we returned to the van, he offered us fresh fruit and cold water, and we sat and cooled down a bit. On the way down the hill in the van, Andres surprised us again by sighting howler monkeys up in the trees by the side of the road, so we all piled out to take in that sight, and had a great view through his scope. Andres was totally invested in giving us the full benefit of his experience, and we all really appreciated this.
The tour was well-organized and we felt it was well worth the money. There are so many tour choices on the internet when planning a trip like this, and we didn’t want to run the risk of being disappointed. I highly recommend Two Weeks in Costa Rica for setting us up with an excellent tour operator.

Weather! It did not cooperate, but our guide was able to make the best of it by pointing out birds, leaf cutter ants, and other natural occurrences so that it was still a 4 Star experience. We will just have to return to see Arenal in all of its’ glory!
